Sion is MEL’s pioneer hydropower project which is a collaboration between MEL’s subsidiary – PT Citra Multi Energi, and a Japanese engineering company. It has an operating capacity of 10MW and has been operating since 2020. PLTM Sion is situated at the Aek Simonggo River which boasts an extensive catchment area of 279km2 and annual rainfall of 3,500mm
Prior to construction, this project was reviewed by foreign experts from USAID, as well as from consultants from SWECO in Norway for its feasibility study and Chodai for its basic and detailed designs.
Its construction was carried out by an Indonesia-Japan foreign investment contractor under the guidance of a Japanese management consultant. Sion Hydropower Plant’s generator consists of 2x Voith Fuji turbines with a maximum installed capacity of 5MW each.
This project is a recipient of the Joint Crediting Mechanism from the Japanese government for its contribution to the reduction of greenhouse gas and carbon emissions.
